Resume Writing Tips for Freshers and Experienced

1.    Don’t include just everything: While crafting a resume, don’t include every work experience you’ve ever had. List the work experience that is relevant to the job you are applying for. Think of your resume as a marketing and selling document that highlights you as the perfect choice for the job.

For example, if you are applying for the job position of a web designer, then mention only that work experience which you have as a web designer. Mentioning your past work experience from another field will make no sense here. So, mention only the relevant work experience.

2.     Keep information ready: Save your essential information including job positions, work experience, bullet points on your computer. This way while crafting a new resume it will be easier for you to copy-paste that information in your resume. This way you will pull relevant information together. You can save it in the notepad, MS Word or any other such document. Make sure that the information that you are saving is correct. Also make sure that you have information about company name, joining date and relieving date of your past employers.

3.    Include the best information “Above the fold”:  While writing a resume, try to put the best information about you “above the fold” i.e., in the front half of the resume. By the best information, we are referring to your best experiences and achievements. Doing this will create a good first impression of your resume. Also, while scanning a resume, the hiring managers and recruiters will instantly get a chance to have a look at your best information.

4.    Avoid Objective Statement: Avoid the objective statement to save crucial space on your resume. According to experts, the objective statement makes sense only when you are making a career change. For example, you are changing from telecommunication field to Information Technology field.

However, if want to include an objective statement in your resume you can do that but if you are short of space on a resume, just skip that.

5.    Follow reverse Chronological order: Organize your resume in a reverse chronological resume format wherein the most recent experience is listed first. Hiring managers look for your most recent experience first. They are more interested in knowing about what you have done recently. Not only work experience, follow reverse chronological order while listing your educational qualification.

6.    Keep your resume to a page or two: There is no logic in extending your resume beyond two pages as no one has so much time to go through the whole of your resume. Cover less space by avoiding any irrelevant information. Be concise and try to tell your story in less space. List only the relevant work experience related to the job position you are applying for.

7.    Keep it short and simple: By simple, we mean design and format. Use basic fonts like Arial, Times New Roman, Helvetica and keep the font size between 10 and 12. Your resume should be easier for the hiring manager to read and understand. Use can use different font size for headings. Don’t become childish by adding color element to your resume. Remember, it is a professional document and a not a school document.

8.    Make use of keywords: Use of keywords in a resume has become extremely important these days as many recruiters and hiring managers are using ATS or Application Tracking System for scanning the applicant’s resumes.

Read the job description thoroughly for which you are going to apply and check which words are used more often. Use those words in your resume in the form of bullet points. Using these keywords will increase the chances of your resume being noticed by application tracking systems.

9.    Include education after experience: Unless you are a fresher, mention your educational details after the experience. Your educational information should also be in the reverse chronological order. The recruiters and hiring managers are more interested in work experience of an experienced candidate rather than education qualification. So, mention your work experienced first followed by educational qualification.

10. Don’t forget the skills section: Include a dedicated section listing all your professional skills. Avoid listing common skills like Microsoft Office which every tech job aspirant is expected to have. Don’t forget to list the skills that are the core requirements of the job position you are applying to.

11. Proofread: Don’t forget to proofread your resume. This way you will make sure that your resume is free of errors and typos. You can also make someone go through your resume. A resume full errors and typos will not only create a bad impression but will also fades your chances of getting selected for the job.
