Treat Arthritis With Ayurveda – Ayurveda is an ancient medical science of Indian origin. It believes in natural and holistic healing of the body and offers treatment for various ailments. Ayurveda insists on holistically constructing a healthy lifestyle along with providing medicines and treatments for multiple health conditions. The treatments generally include medications, supplements, dietary changes, and exercise. For instance, Ayurvedic practitioners may combine the health benefits of ashwagandha, use the herb as a supplement, and add yoga to the routine while recommending treatment for certain diseases.

Some of the widely used herbal supplements for arthritis are- 

  1. Ashwagandha- Ashwagandha is a star performer of Ayurveda. The herb is famous for its anti-inflammatory and soothing properties. It may relieve the swelling and pain in arthritis by preventing the signals of pain from traveling through the central nervous system. In a small study, ashwagandha proved to be an effective remedy for joint pain relief among people with rheumatoid arthritis. 
  2. Capsaicin- Capsaicin is an active ingredient in chili peppers famous for its heat-producing properties. It eases arthritis-related pain with the same approach. Capsaicin controls a pain transmitter called substance P and manages its release or depletion. Regular use of capsaicin may prevent substance P from building up again. A patch test is recommended before the use of this ayurvedic remedy for arthritis pain relief. 
  3. Curcumin- Curcumin is the active ingredient of turmeric. It functions against arthritis symptoms by blocking the substances that cause inflammation and helps reduce cartilage damage. It may also obstruct the pain signals in the body. The general dosage of curcumin for arthritis is 200 to 500 mg up to four times per day. One can also use a topical curcumin cream or gel up to four times per day for pain relief. Prior doctor consultation is mandatory for using curcumin as a treatment for arthritis. 
  4. Fish oil- The omega-3s in fish oil may relieve the symptoms of arthritis by blocking substances that are the root causes of inflammation. It converts them into anti-inflammatory chemicals that avoid pain. Joint tenderness and pain are the main problems that fish oil targets. Remember to take fish oil capsules with at least 30% of EPA or DHA concentrations and select the supplement from a reliable brand that contains no toxins and additives. A typical dose for fish oil supplement is 500 mg. 

 Ayurveda’s Dietary Recommendations for Arthritis- 

Ayurvedic practitioners believe in light foods like soups with oils such as castor oil which acts as a natural laxative to calm the symptoms of arthritis. As Ayurveda believes in the holistic treatment of conditions like arthritis, it recommends avoiding certain foods to control the worsening of the condition. 

  • Excess salt

Ayurvedic practitioners believe that healthy lifestyle habits can support arthritis treatment. The major causes of the inflammation can be sedentary lifestyle practices. Practicing yoga is an excellent way to deal with stiffness and pain caused by arthritis. Regular exercise and yoga can gradually fade the symptoms of arthritis and relieve muscle soreness. 

Along with these tips, having a healthy routine, drinking plenty of water, taking massage therapy, and eating a balanced diet may also help reduce inflammation in a concerted manner. As far as ayurvedic treatments for arthritis are concerned, more specific research is required in the field. Remember, no single treatment is enough to combat diseases like arthritis. Following an overall healthy lifestyle and adhering to doctors’ guidelines is a must to treat arthritis.
